Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce

St Louis Ribs with homemade BBQ Sauce

OK… so we all get it… BBQ is truly amazing, but what is it without the right BBQ sauce? And what better than a Homemade BBQ Sauce?

Let’s face it, so much of the BBQ Sauce you can purchase out there is sickly sweet and full of sugar and no real body, so why not make your own?

Now before you run away scared that this is going to be somewhat of a difficult task, rest assured this recipe takes about 10minutes to smash together and produces an amazing sauce, perfect for covering your ribs in.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 Cup ketchup (worst case tomato sauce)
  • 1/4 Cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 Cup worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 Cup bourbon (or similar dark spirit)
  • 1/4 Cup chilli sauce (if you want some heat, if not leave this out)
  • 1 Teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1 Teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Method:

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Then cook on low, continuing to stir until it’s mixed, there’s no sign of sugar, garlic or mustard powders… and you’re done!

It really couldn’t be much simpler… and boy what a difference this makes.

The bourbon I used was a Jim Beam Maple – this added an extra maple kick, along with some sweetness, to give it a nice edge.

Not only does this sauce work a treat on dishes like St Louis Pork Ribs, it works well in things like our Slow cooked cowboy beans with bacon and chorizo.
